What is Waterfall Chart – A perfect way to visualize cumulative effect of growth or effect over the period. The waterfall chart is similar to Brick or Mario chart as often describe this way, it happens due to visual effect of the chart. Waterfall chart makes you understood the where a value starts and how it performs to next level, it may be in positive or negative. A user or end customer can instantly interpret the result with the help of visual analytics in form of Waterfall chart.
Tableau is really virtuous at visual analytics and quite capable of creating various custom charts. Waterfall chart is quite possible in tableau but it could be little hard to remember the steps for the same.
For apprentices below the one example of waterfall chart. We want to show the growth of Retail Company for over the year.
Step – 1
Let’s find the steps to create Waterfall chart in Tableau.
Connect to your data set.
Go to “Data” and click on “New Data Source” Select data source type, In this case we have selected Excel workbook.
Step – 2
We want to show the waterfall chart on the basis of months and profit. Put Order Date capsule and drop it to column Shelf & change it to months. Also select “Profit” and drop it to Row shelf. You need to Change line chart to Bar graph initially as Tableau will create line chart for you first. And it should look like below.
Step – 3
Create Calculated field name (Minus Profit) which is nothing but minus of Profit
Step – 4
Now go to profit capsule you have dropped to row shelf and right click on it, Go to Quick table calculation and select Running Total. Also go to Analysis tab – Totals and Select Show Row Grand Totals
You need to go to Mark shelf and Select Gantt Bar from the list. Also pick the calculated field you have created (Minus Profit) and drop the same to Size Field to Mark Shelf.
Step – 5
Also drop calculated field (Minus Profit) to Color shelf and change go to step color and change it to 2 Color Step size.
Your Waterfall chart is ready for Visualization to your End customers.
You can easily interpret with the step size of block, how each month is performing. Whereas March is least performing month, producing profit in negative. November & December are highest contributor of profit as compare to other months.
